Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: Greatest Hits

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: Greatest Hits Review

The lovable twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, have been growing up since their playful Brother for Sale. So it's no surprise that this Greatest Hits collection's opening frame of tunes (from Ballet Party) features them discussing the history of the sleepover party and their desire to travel to see the New York City Ballet. They're reaching adolescence, with richer voices and more precise articulation, and this becomes all the more clear when they sing Brother's title track in very young, cutesy voices. The twins have obviously captured more children's imagination since their debut and so this collection's emphasis is understandably on their later work. It's this work that makes this set best for kids 10 and older, especially the closing 4 songs--all of which relate to fashion, junior high school, and the mall. Many parents are pining for stuff this innocent for their near-adolescent kids and this collection is golden for that set. For parents of younger kids interested in the dynamic duo, start with the funny Brother for Sale or I Am the Cute One. --Andrew Bartlett

Those Were the Days

Those Were the Days Review

Specially repackaged 2008 edition of this four CD box set consisting of 63 tracks that divide Cream's short but immensely influential career into two halves. The first two discs feature every studio track the group ever released, plus a handful of unreleased tracks, alternate takes and rarities. The other two discs are devoted to restored live material, which bring to life some of Cream's finest eclectic moments in concert such as Live At Winterland in San Francisco 1968. The power trio of guitarist Eric Clapton, bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker were visionary with their distinctive sound, a unique collision of Blues, Jazz, Folk and Psychedelic Rock that not only defined the band's identity but captured the thrilling heady atmosphere of the late 1960s and set the ground work for rock bands that followed in the 1970s. This remarkably comprehensive collection comes complete with an extensive booklet, rare photographs and digitally remastered recordings. Universal.

Vinyl Reissue of Cream's Disraeli Gears album which was recorded in the U.S. in a three-and-a-half day flurry of inspired activity before the band members' visas expired. This was the second album by the British blues-rock group Cream and it was released in November 1967. Ice Cream

Ice Cream Review

Easily the best blues guitarist this country has produced since Clapton' said one recent reviewer, and 'Ice Cream', from Eddie Martin, shows why many consider this prolific performer and song-writer to be the new face and future of British Blues.

Earthy as the best Classic British blues – intense and raw like early Cream or Led Zeppelin - but revealing a deeper connection to the American Blues that Martin has spent his life studying – this album takes blues into the 21st century. 'Lets Move it On' is the opener – a modern day blues-rock classic. It showcases Martin’s stunning slide guitar-work and the maturity of his song-writing.

With his top Chicagoan rhythm section, the album boasts intense electric blues that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the best of Buddy Guy. In that vein is the slow-burn screamer 'Put the Brakes On'. The arrangement takes you to the tropics before dropping you in the plunge pool, perfectly matching the angst of the songs lyrics.

Next up is the album’s title track, 'Ice Cream', a dark, sexy shuffle which takes us to the swamps of Mississippi. This, and the soulful ballad 'Love is Like A River' (featuring Andy Sheppard on soprano), show the tough and tender sides of Martin as a composer and performer. These tracks are likely to be the big radio hits of the album.

The album then takes us on a roller-coaster ride of pedigree blues song-writing from old-time country blues 'Blues Took Me By the Hand' to rocking party shuffles 'Cherry Red' and modern funk blues 'Keep It Natural'.

Martin’s six previous cd releases have been rave-reviewed for their musicianship and songwriting. 'Ice Cream' stands head and shoulders above its peers and demands to be listened to.

Strawberry Cream And Gunpowder

Strawberry Cream And Gunpowder Review

Born in Tel Aviv, in 1963, Avi Belleli is one of Israel's most notable composers. He is best known as the lead song-writer, vocalist and bass player for the rock group, TRACTOR'S REVENGE, who have made seven albums on Israeli lables, in the last few of which have gone Gold. This disc is music set to a dance piece of the same name by the young choreographer, Yasmeen Goder, which has enjoyed several runs in Europe, Japan, Israel, and New York. The project is influenced by recent events in the Middle East, and with regards to the global terror atmosphere in general, but in more a psychological than political way: It questions the connections between power and fear, sex and control, gender issues and personal crisis, whilst examining ways by wich individualscan learn to cope with sudden, radical, (and sometimes horrifying) changes in their lives.

Cream Cuts

Cream Cuts Review

Cream Cuts Feature

  • Electronic/Experimental, Pop
Cream Cuts finds Tussle expanding upon it's own unique mix of drums, bass & electronics, at times echoing the elasticity & straight forward live approach of their debut, Kling Klang, but with more color & complexity, while also integrating the psychedelic pulsating pound heard on Telescope Mind. Moving above & beyond their first two releases, Tussle map out worlds upon worlds on Cream Cuts, riding songs from creation to destruction to rebirth. Thom Monahan's (Vetiver, Joanna Newsom, Silver Jews, Devendra Banhart) unconventional production techniques & talent for capturing intimate performances integrate with Tussle's krauty exploration of rhythm leading to the bands most epic, experimental yet holistic release to date.
